Hotel Shangri-La is an architectural gem and iconic landmark on the Pacific Ocean in Santa Monica, California.
Built in 1939, it is a quintessential example of Streamline Moderne architecture. For decades, the Hotel Shangri-La has been a popular hideaway for guests ranging from presidents to movie stars.
In January 2009, it reopened after a $30 million refurbishment—the first renovation in more than 20 years. The completely remodeled site embodies key elements of the original design while bringing it into the 21st Century.
The first step owner and hotelier, Tehmina Adaya, took in restoring this landmark hotel was to perform extensive research on both lifestyle and architecture. The results provided insights into how each room was to be restored to include modern amenities with traditional materials—including Crogan Inlay Floors. By honoring the existing structure and period finished, the Shangri-LA is now an inspiring and unique facility that embodies art, luxury, and preserved mid-century architecture.
